happy new year, shigeki!

filipinos don't eat noodles for new year's. we eat long noodles on our birthdays. the joke is that bad people should eat macaroni on their birthdays because macaroni is short and bent.

new year's eve is very loud in the philippines. each household amasses a small arsenal of firecrackers in the days before the event. on new year's eve, family and friends gather together for a big dinner and then at an unspecified time--it just happens--everyone in the neighbourhood go out into their front lawns and ignite their firecrackers. these firecrackers can include and are not limited to sparklers, roman candles, cherry bombs, judas belts, and a lot of other loud and bright things. it's actually pretty dangerous as you can seriously burn yourself if you're not careful. but i remember it as a very fun time when i was a child. too bad we don't do stuff like that here in canada.

I guess the closest thing to an L.A. tradition would be to watch the Tournament of Roses Parade on TV!!!!!! But it really is something else to get up early and watch it live. I was just too lazy and too cold to do it this year. I should have done it last year when George Lucas was the grand marshal and they had all the Star Wars geeks dress up like storm troopers and march down the 5-mile parade route!!!!!! Akemashite omedetou!!!!!! I wonder where your mystery destination has taken you...
