Wrong First Impressions

1... A friend of mine who lives in the States asked me whether I eat whale every day.... Where did that come from? I was surprised to find out he wasn't the only one who thinks like that.... I haven't had whale for a long time but since he brought it up, I wanted some. So for my lunch today, I went to eat fried whale meat in the photo. Oh yes, I know this is politically incorrect but it was fabulous. I am going to hell anyway...... Please don't hate me that I had this. Tuna is going to be very scarce soon, people.
2... A long time friend of mine from high school whose father is American and whose mother is Japanese asked me whether I could make a trip to the States with him. The thing is he doesn't look Japanese at all even though he is technically Japanese according to his passport. He is hazel-eyed. His skin is pretty white. And he cannot speak English AT ALL because his parents decided English wasn't important for him. It's pretty funny for most of people but he has gone through the hell of time when he was younger. Of course, he tried to learn English HARD but that didn't work out. Anyway, I am going to be the guide for the guy in a country from where his dad is from...But the way he speaks Japanese is beautiful!! I cannot speak that beautifully. So he has something else to back him up :-)
3...A friend of mine is a size queen. On the other hand, I don't mind as long as it functions properly. He told me it matters under any circumstances. I asked him if he didn't mind the Mr. right now's tender was extremely tender as long as it was huge. He said "no". Really? If Mr. Right Now's tender was very soft, I'd go "huh....". The harder, the better. It doesn't matter whether it's huge or not..... hold on... Better yet, I should totally stop this conversation... I am supposed to be a grown up years ago...Have a fantabulous week!

how does whale taste like? i m intriged.

1) I think that your friend asked that question because it's been in the news a lot over here recently about Japan doing a lot of whale hunting recently.

2) Your friend must have had a hard time growing up if he looked different from everyone else. You're a good friend to go on the trip with him! :)

3) What's the old saying? "it's not the size of the boat, it's the motion in the ocean." ;P

yeah, i'm curious too to find out what whale tastes like. anyway, it's interesting that you mentioned that we won't have tuna for long. i went to an all-you-can-eat japanese restaurant last night with my family. they didn't have any maguro on their menu at all.

it's unfortunate that your friend's parents decided that he shouldn't have to learn english. not only is it a part of his heritage--he is half american, after all--, but speaking many different languages is a very necessary skill nowadays. to be honest, i can't imagine being able to speak only one language. it seems so horrible!

as for your size queen friend, does he measure up to his own standards?

Interesting that I had whale meat just a few weeks ago. Was my first. Whale meat is sold here in Norway like meatcakes. Aside from that, I've also eaten reindeer and elk/moose since I came here.

1. So what is whale meat like?

2. Every half caucasian/half Asian guy I have or seen (not that many actually) has been very handsome. Too bad he did not learn to speak English, but I wonder if it would have affected how he spoke Japanese? I am an ignorant mono-lingual except for a little bit of Russian.

3. Never understood size queens.

I never tasted whale meat whilst I was working in Japan although I did want to try the meat but the politics in me got the better of me! So be it! Hate you? Nah.... just be yourself.

Gym boy was half asian/half caucasian! and no wonder I was attracted to him BIG time!! If only he smiled more!!! :-(

What size queen? Huh??? :-P

Shigeki, will you please explain how the whale meat was prepared. Having never seen it before I can't figure out what I'm looking at. Has it been fried and rolled in sesame seeds or something? And might that be a slice of yuzu next to it? Much appreciated...
Lane

Hey Shigeki! Can you please tell me how the whale meat was prepared? I can't figure it out. It looks like it's been fried and rolled in sesame seeds or something and served with a slice of yuzu. So pretty with the pine tree(?) branch on the side.
My friend and her sister who were born in Japan then moved to New York/New Jersey during their grade school years and moved back to Japan speak both Japanese and English fluently. And they sound native in both languages. I believe this has affected their lives very positively.
Thanks, Lane

Tasted like chicken when I had it (deep fried). I've missed you, S-chama! Been CRAZY busy!!!!!! Only 12 days until I am in Nihon again, no matter how short the visit! muwah xoxoxoxoxoxo

weird, if it taste like chicken why do people want to kill rare animals for its meat?

Yes, it is considered politically incorrect. You naughty boy. :)
Here we have whale watching tours and they are very popular.

I myself cannot criticize because I have eaten deer, moose, caribou, bear, buffalo, rabbit, ostrich, just about any wild meat you can think of.( I don't anymore though).

PS I love TigerYogi's response, "it's not the size of the boat, it's the motion in the ocean."

Hmm... *poke, poke* So how is March treating you Sir? :)

shigeki...where are you? everything okay?

Bad boy Shigeki! Eating whale! bad bad bad!

GBD xxx

Yum. Is whale meat nice? And is your white, hazel-eyed friend hot?

Hi Circuit Boy,

To me and many people around my age, we always say "a smellier version of beef" but the texture is very unique and as is the taste. For me, the closest thing would be Buffalo's meat if you have ever had it. :-) Have a good week!

Hi TigerYogi,

Really? I've read a few articles about it over the last weeks. But it didn't get my attention too much.. Yup, he's had difficult times and I've seen him cry a lot during high school years. But I think he's over it :-) You have a good week!

Hi Raph,

As mentioned to Circuit Boy, to me, it tastes like a smellier version of beef. It's like buffalo's or deer's meat in my personal opinion. It's not too fantastic but okay. I am sure Tuna is going to be more expensive from now on. It's already been actually. I am sorry but being in Japan, not knowing another language is not a big deal at all. Really. So I can understand why his parents decided that. I mean being in an island country, we tend to stay within all the time. So being not able to speak another language isn't a big deal while it's considered as a great skill set :-) You have a good week!

Hi Mark,

I think I had reindeer meetballs with straberry jam when I was in Stockholm but it wasn't the best meal :-) I could live without whale actually but I cannot live without chicken/turkey. Ergo, I can never be a vegetarian. :-) You have a good week!

Hi T.Kevin,

When it's uncooked, it totally looks like beef but the taste is like a little smellier than beef but the texture is very similar to beef. :-) My half american/half japanese friend is very good looking, too but he is so straight. :-( A little big of Russian? Wow. That's fantastic. The only Russian word I know is "Vodka". :-) You have a good week!

HiIan,

Well, since it's widely available here in Japan, you should have tired. If you closed your eyes and ate it, you wouldn't know if it was whale as it doesn't taste "whaely" :-) You are a size queen? huh? oh no. :-) You have a good week!

HI Lane,

The fried whale meat I had the other day was fried. Just like fried chicken (Tori no karaage). Marinated in Soy sauce, sake, ginger for awhile and then, flour all over the meat. And then fry it :-) If you know the recipe of the tori no karaage, it's the same thing. THe only difference is meat. Here's the example. I moved to Germany when I was young but that didn't affect me at all :-( sad. But I sound alright in Japanese yay. You have a good week!

Hi GaijinGirl,

Maybe because it was fixed like tori kara age. But how you chew should have been very different :-) I hope you won't be too busy anymore:_ How long are you gonna be here for? You have a good week!

Hi Circuit Boy,

Well, right after the World War II, Whale was the cheepy easier source for protein rather than beef. (Well, Japan has been hunting whale more in the past but for the modern world) that's why we've been hunting it. Right now, it's not really common to have it as you know it's very restricted all over the world.

HI Maggie,

I think the poblem is that people assume every kind of whale is getting ridiculously scarce but then some kinds are over the capacity. And we only get those small not-so-scarce whale but oh well. :-) I can live without whale anyway. French eat rabbit on a regular basis :-) But Bear doesn't sound intriguing. It must have been smelly? You have a good week!

Hi Sven,

OH MY GOOD GOD. How long has it been? I am glad you are alive!! I hope you are doing pretty good! March is treating me alright so far, Thanks for visiting again :-) You have a good week!

Hi Raph,

I had to go to Boston two weeks in a row (Twice) and it was very crazy but since it's getting back to normal, I am hoping I will be able to blog more. THanks. You have a good week!

HI Gayboydiary,

Well, us, human beings, being here is already bad according to some religions.. THanks for the heads-up but I don't find it that bad. Sorry. You have a good week.

HI Paul,

hmmm.. it's nice. yes. But I could actually live wihtout it if I can get nice fried chicken :-) Yes, my hazel eyed friend is very hot. He was a model but he is very straight. :-( You have a good week!
