Like a Samurai or a Geisha?

This is my Japanese folding fan for this year. I bought it yesterday. It's defenitely hot here in Tokyo but city heat is very sexy. I am in this chilly-my-valuable-shrinking room all day today though because I have to work on the server (a big geeky device you see at an organization). I think it's nice for Japanese young adults (I hope I am in that category still) to have something Japanese. I appreciate what people back in old days invented. You can put it in a pocket, take it out, and unfold it when you wave it in your face to feel cooler. (Well, it won't cool you down immediately but it's all about style, baby.) Also, you can hide half of your face with this but stare at a hottie so strongly by wishing "I wanna get fudged!" like a geisha girl but I don't think that's appropriate. Some may think these fans are only for ladies. Not really. This one in the photo is for men. If you are a guy, it won't make you less of a man. I am totally comfy with my masculinity even though there isn't much about me being masculine. :-P You can also use it as a pointer during the meeting, too. Fancy, huh? No, I don't use it to verify if I have the ability to fly by flapping so hard. I actually did it when I was little Anyway, this is a must item for me in summer. These traditional Japanese fans are becoming popular among young adults. When you are in Japan and buy a Japanese fan, please don't buy the Japanese flag thingy with a weird phrase in Kanji at a souvenier place. Buy something classy for better taste. :-) You have a wonderful summer day.(If it's not summer in where you are, sorry...)

I need one that's battery powered. OR one that comes with it's own hunky guy to fan me.

Yeah, I think I'd prefer option two. ;)

it's been so hot here that a hand held fan makes me create more sweat by flapping it than it evaporates. electric is the way to go :) i have a little battery powered propeller fan that has a water squirter to add that certain cooling je ne c'est quoi :)

Do you buy a new fan every year, S-chama? Kind of like an official "summer's here" tradition?

We have a unit in our English textbook about rakugo, and the American guy who performs rakugo uses his fan to mime eating with chopsticks, drinking out of a giant sake saucer (what are they called?!), and reading a newspaper.

But I agree--fans are very coquettish and sexy, even for guys. You know I'm going to go all out on August 2nd (yukata, Japaneseque bag, geta, hair clips, and of course, a fan!!!!!!)

What a very handsome fan! I want one! Although I think in Washington it would not be as accepted, especially in the hand of a Euro-mutt guy, aka me. :-(

TK

I love those fans!

I always carry one with me too! (People make look at me funny, but at least I have a nice breeze!)

I wonder sometimes why Japanese guys use the fans and not some other device.....something that I personally find it quite unique! And the confidence they potrait when using the fans - it's almost masculine in its way. But having said that you won't catch me using the fan....hehehehe. It will not fit my overall image...Happy to sweat like a pig and smell.... It's more masculine! You have a good day! And gosh it's a hot day today in Tokyo. Thank GOD for Air Condition!!

I'd love to use the fan as a pointer! it would be so cool & very kungfu master! But it does seem a little rude to use it like that, no?

You always make me laugh.

I am glad you feel comfy with your masculinity to have a fan. I could use a fan today, our temperatere is 102F. It is HOT!

I agree with you, the young ones these days should be more proud of their ancestros and all that they did for us.

OMG, what a beautiful fan! I don't see myself going to Japan in the near future but I am definitely going to look online.

As for masculinity, didn't the samurai have a fan called tessen (iron fan) ?
You can't get much more masculine than that................... HOT!!!!!!
Or should I say COOL? You know what I mean. haha :-)

Hi JaSoN,

Hahaha. That's surprising considering you have yummy muscles to do all the work. oh, wait a minute, don't use your muscle and let me be your guy to fan you even though I am not hunky, I can still be qualified? No? And let's see how it leads. :-) You have a fantabulous weekend!

Hi Naomi,

I know it won't help you much to cool you down like airconditioners but it's all about style. How you could look with it is the way to go. :-) It's such a classy thing like fashion really. :-) You have a fantabulous weekend!

Hi GaijinGirl,

Yes, I buy it every year and I don't think it's any traditional way to do that. But I do it for some reason. Yup, fans are so coquettish. it may not be too helpful to cool you down but there are more things to do with it. :-) Make sure you don't take that "Ichiban" with Japanese Flag thingy on it. :-) You have a fantabulous weekend!

Hi TK,

Yup, I like that one very much. I am not sure if I'd do the same when I lived in another country but it's classy and nice so I might as well do that even if people stare at me. :-) But see, you can try it. You have a fantabulous weekend!

HI Hanuman1960,

You have one of those, too? That's so cool! See this is another way to train your wrists, no? so your boy will be so pleased indirectly. :) You have a fantabulous weekend!

Hi Ian,

Well, I think it's because we think it's cool to have one of those. I am not sure. :-) when you take a Japanese lesson next time, please ask what "Iki" means. I think I use it as it is an Iki (Roughly translated into stylishness ) thingy to do for Edokko (A real tokyoite). :-) Sweating huky guys are sexy. I totally agree but it was brutally hot yesterday! So is Today. Take good care of yourself! You have a fantabulous weekend!

Hi AJ,

Yeah, it's a nice way to use it as a pointer. And it wouldn't be totally inappropriate unless you point at any people. I use it as a pointer when I point something on the board or something. :-) Yo uhave a fantabulous weekend!

Hi Cesar,

Yeah, you should totally get one. That's hot. But I think it went up to something similar yesterday here in Tokyo. But I am pretty sure it was much more humid here... ugh! I hope you cooled down with less aclohol and all, you know. You have a fantabulous weekend!

Hi Maggie,

Thank you! I like that one, too. Oh, that's right you can totally get it via online. There are so many different thingies. :-) I am not sure if the Samurai used it. I always tend to focus on his sword. :-) You have a fantabulous weekend!
