I'd like to disagree I was inappropriate.

Mon, 19 June 2006

6 months ago, I was asked by a close friend of mine to be an organist for his wedding which was yesterday. The last time I was an organist at church for someone's wedding, I didn't enjoy it. My fantabulous shoes were killing my feet. I shouldn't have told anyone my minor in that jesuit college was music... The worst part of this wedding is that I don't like playing organ because
a) someone stupid invented the pedal keyboard.
b) It's a funny instrument. There is always a delay until the sound comes out because it takes time for the air to travel after pressing keyboard.
c)
I don't get to see the wedding while playing because I face the organ only.
d) I am much more interested in the other kind of pipe(s) to play if you know what I mean.
As a pipe organ is not easily accessible on a daily basis and I wanted to make sure I'd play okay, I went there 4 hours prior to the ceremony. Now, there was one piece I was dying to try on the organ. I wanted to play "Jalousie" by Jacob Gade. So I played it right after the morning mass. Unfortunately, the groom (my friend) came in while I was playing. That piece of music would have made a misleading statement for him... But he didn't know what it was. :-) Nope, I wasn't jealous at all. But, the father of the church was not happy with me playing that piece. It's not like I played "requiem"... I had to listen to a wordy lecture from the father... But it was totally worth it. You have a fantabulous non-inappropriate day! :-)

Shigeki! I didn't know you play the organ. I play electone, (electronic organ) and have played at a few weddings in Australia, and one in Japan. I agree that it sucks when you can't watch the wedding. I used to get so nervous the first few times when the bride started walking into the church. Everyone is soooo quiet and it's the bride's special moment. I didn't want to ruin it.

Next time you should use electone and not pipe organ. The sound is immediate, and you can make it sound much more exciting than just pipe.

Though, yes, sometimes pipes can be exiting too.

I think the father was just jealous that you get to play organs and pipes of both kinds ;D Did you wear the killer shoes again? I don't understand why shoes that are so freakin' expensive are also so bloody painful (like my Kobe princess shoes). Oh, well. It is much better to look FANTABULOUS than to feel fantabulous. No pain, no gain, and all that jazz...

You are a man of many talents.

I agree, playing with other organs is probably more fun.

Hmph! Everyone else made all the organ jokes! So I guess I some education. Shigeki, will you teach me how to play with your organ?

I am reminded of an episode of The Simpsons where Bart replaces the church music with "Ana Godda Da Vida" by Iron Butterfly. The organist plays it on the pipe organ and then at the end (it's a long song) drops dead.

And as instruments go, I prefer the Skin Flute myself.

Yes, skin flute is my "organ of choice" as well!

Yeah, the priests get all uptight when you play secular music in "The House of God"!

He didn't need to give you a long lecture about it though! You're not a child after all!

I never became adept at handling instrument, except that one thing some of these guys were talking about. ^_^ So what shoes did you wear to the ceremony? A less-killer Prada, I reckon, you fantabulous Shigeki.

One thing you said about facing the organ only. I take it then you are a top if you don't ever back into the organ?

Weak attempts at humour aside, how cool that you can play the pipe organ!

You always surprise me with something great. :)

My grandmother had a organ we used to play with as kids. The air must have come from the pedals as they were so hard to pump. When I was little my feet didn't reach so one of my brothers had to do it for me. You just gave me a wonderful memory and I thank you for it.

The priest's lecture was totally worth it? Or the wedding was totally worth the lecture? Ta :)

Hi Grant,

um.... I don't really seriously play the organ at all. I just happen to play it on a special occasion. I religiously played the piano during college years though. :-) My sister plays the Electone. Thanks for the tip. But then, electone is overwhelming for me as it's got too many buttons!! I am a simple guy. :-) You have a fantabulous day!

Hi GaijinGirl,

Since I have become wiser, I didn't wear the fantabulous Prada shoes this times but wore Regal shoes. They are comfy and classy. :-) Well, I go for both feeling and looking fantabulous. Don't you agree? :-) I asked the Italian shoe repair place to stretch my shoes a little bit to fit better. The service is not really cheap but it was great. You should try one of those for your killing shoes. You have a fantabulous day!

Hi Cesar,

Playing the organ for the wedding could be exciting but it's not one of the talents I am proud of. I'd rather hide it :-) So that I don't have to get nervous at all. Yes, I am much more interested in playing the other kind. :-) You have a fantabulous day!

Hi AJ,

I guess we are all pervy? :-) It's not a bad thing, is it? Well, you must be an expert to play it by now. no? You have a fantabulous day!

Hi Mark,

I have never watched the Simpsons before (Don't be shocked) so I don't know which episode that was. But even if I did play something inappropriate for church, the wall didn't start to bleed. :-) Skin Flute? huh... Thanks for being specific. :-) You have a fantabulous day!

Hi Hanuman1960,

The priests are always rigid. Oh, that's right. I forgot about "the house of God" part. :-) Well, he always gives me a lecture. You know those people who cannot end their talks shortly? :-) He is one of them. :-) You have a fantabulous day!

Hi Mark,

Well, I am sure you handle "that" instrument beautifully. Please show me how well you play those. :-) I didn't wear Prada shoes this time as I have become wiser (hopefully) I wore Japanese brand, Regal. They are nice and comfy. :-) You have a fantabulous day!

Hi Steve,

hehehe. Well, I don't like to get stuck in one position as I'd love to explorer other things. :-) I had to take two Pipe organ courses in college. So I guess I play it alright. Doesn't mean I play it brilliantly. But I'd love to be better at other organs. :-) You have a fantabulous day!

Hi Maggie,

Really? Playing the pipe organ is so not fascinating. I remember that kind of an organ! I think we had it in our kindergarten or something. That's a cute memory you have. :-) I can totally picture two kids helping each other to play it. :-) Lovely. Well, the inappropriate attempt on the pipe organ was great even if I had to listen to his lecture.... :-) You have a fantabulous day!

Wow! You're so talented Shigeki! Quite the expert at playing ... pipe organs ;-) GB

Posted by: gayboydiary at June 20, 2006 08:55 PM

Well, interesting. I am a long time member of the American Guild of Organists, and a classically trained pianist. I was an assistant organist and choirmaster at an Episcopal Cathedral near me for a few years. It's good to know that someone else out there isn't ashamed to admit he plays the organ.

No matter what kind it may be. ;)
