Split Personality
Sat, 18 February 2006

So I had a job interview today even though it was Saturday. It's surprising to have a job interview on a weekend. Anyway, it doesn't hurt that I start looking for a new job as I am thinking of quitting the current one by the end of August at the latest. Since I usually work for a company that is spread worldwide, I get interviewed both in Japanese and English. They always test my English speaking skills. But it occurred to me today that the way I act and say things in English is a little different from what I usually do in japanese. I think a language does that. You've heard me speaking in Japanese and in English but this doesn't tell you much. For example, my voice goes an octave higher when I speak French because I get too nervous. Okay, this doesn't help, either.... When I speak Japanese during the interview, I try to be humble and try not to express my feelings much as it's a Japanese way to go. When I speak English during the interview, I try to say what I am good at and what I am willing to do. This cannot be said in a Japanese interview. I was wondering if my personality differs depending on the language I speak.... My ex once told me that I am very direct and manly when I speak English but I am kind and humble when I speak Japanese.... Should I go see a doctor about this? This is my finding for today.... The interview went pretty well. The Japanese interviewer was kinda hot. But the English one wasn't... huh... and I guess they didn't hate me. You have a fabulous weekend!

I don't think you have a split personality. You are just showing your knowledge of both cultures. I think Asian cultures have a tendency to be humble, overly so sometimes. I find myself doing the same thing--saying, "No, no," in Japanese, but in English, just a simple "Thanks" when someone compliments me on something.
I hope you get to see the Japanese hottie interviewer a lot when he becomes your co-worker, if you decide that's the job you want to take. Good luck whatever you decide! MUWAH!!!!!!

I love to hear spoken Japanese!
Seriously, and don't get mad at me for saying this, because maybe it's my Gaydar picking this up, but, when you speak English, I can TELL that you're Gay!!! It's something in the tone and inflection of your words..... ;)

It doesn't matter what octane you speak with but the most important thing is whether you're a good fit for the company! :-) Trust me, I have been the interviewer and I always looked out for peronality and passion. When these two are present during your interview, it's likelihood that the interviewee would be hired. So based on your description of the events today, it sounds like you will be a good fit! Good luck.
Having said that, I would love to hear you speak!! :-) Have a good weekend. I'll be recovering from an alcholic enrichment weekend :-) How on earth am I going to have a six pack abs if I continue with the drinking binge!

Good luck, hopefully you will find another jobs soon.
I find that I am more respectful/proper when I speak Spanish than when I speak english. It it just part of the culture I guess but I have noticed and it is kind of strange.

good luck!
i don't know if my personality changes in relation to the language i'm speaking. i'm prolly just as bossy and bitchy in whatever language i speak in.
i do agree about changing voices, though, when i speak a different language. my voice actually goes down a bit when i speak french. i feel that i have to speak with a deep voice when i speak french, at least, when i speak with a european french accent. when i speak with a québécois accent, i get all faggy. :P

good luck with the interview :) i hope you get the job, that is, if you want it.
what you talk about, the change in vocal tones and things like that, that's a true thing. i took a class in cree this past summer (one of the native languages of canada). it's a very precise and gentle language. i likened it to listening to the wind blowing through aspen trees. it's not just the sound that's gentle, it's the whole mein of the language that is different. english is a very harsh and agressive language.

Direct and manly. Sexy. Do it to me again, baby!
But I guess you are right and languages do sound a bit different when spoken. Somehow Mandarin to me has never sounded romantic. I know I'll have guys coming to beat me up with sticks but hey, it always sounds so cool, practical and methodical... not a language made to whisper into a lover's ear somehow.

I wonder how I'd sound like talking in Japanese. Bought this instuctional Japanese language CD a couple o' weeks ago although I haven't gotten around to playing it. :-) I love your English speaking voice, so dreamy and sexy. Maybe I should hear you speak in Japanese to know the difference. Why don't you do a VOX post where you're talking entirely in Japanese. Hmmm... wild thoughts are running in my mind now. :-) Happy Sunday!

I wasn't going to say it, but Hanuman did first. ;-) In your other audioblogs in English you sound very butch and manly, but in that one in 2 languages, I thought the Japanese one was more forceful, and the English one... when you say "Please press two." You sound like a slightly annoyed (but still very sexy) gay guy. Guess we have good gaydar! Happy weekend!

I speak Japanese like a girl! with the 'annata-wa's & the 'watashi wa's but its ok cos I speak english like a total bitch, chinese rather shyly & malay like a slacker. Its all how you feel comfortable babe, You have a Fabu-dramatic week ahead!

Shigeki-san, I would love to learn japanese from you. ;) so that I can be kind and humble too. ;)

Hi GiajinGirl,
It's funny that I cannot act same way. I say "no-no-no" in Japanese, too. :-) Just an ordinary way to be humble, right? But I guess it totally depends on whom you are talking to, too. :-) I think when I have sex in English, I become a different person slightly, too. :-) Well, i am not sure if I want this job but when I do, I shall let you know. :-) thanks very much! You have a fantastic evening!
Hi Hanuman,
Hahaha. I am not mad or anything but I am SO INSULTED! Kidding :-) I am gay so it's pretty normal I sound gay but I hope I don't sound like a big pink flaming queer or something. huh.... I didn't think of that though... You have a great morning!
Hi Ian,
Well, I totally see your point but my point was I act/sound different depending on the language. :-) I don't think I can be one of interviewers as I don't have a special skill to judge someone in a short time. of course, I can judge their outfits though. :-) Do you get a hang over? If you do, you should try my secret. Good evening!
Hi Cesar,
Thanks very much. I am no in hurry but if I do find a great job, I think I will move on pretty soon. :-) That's kewl that you notice the difference depending on the language you speak. :-) You have a pleasant morning!
Hi Raph,
Thanks! Well, personality is kinda too exaggerating but you might notice the change for sure. :-) Really? I guess I have this stupid octave high tendency when I speak French but I am not fluent like you are. that might be why.... You have a gorgeous morning!
Hi Naomi,
Thanks very much. Cree? I wonder how it would sound like. :-) I like anything gentle but I wonder how it would sound in a filthy situation I am thinking in my head.... hmmm.... I like how Canadian/American English sounds though. You have a great morning!
Hi Paul,
hahaha. Yeah, I am glad I am not the only one who thinks so. :-) Mandarin is kinda difficult for me to listen to because I have no idea. :-) My dream would be someone to whisper me in French. When my ex whispered me in Dutch, that wasn't romantic at all..... You have a wonderful evening!
Hi Mark,
Oh you told me about that instructional CD. :-) I don't particularly like my English speaking voice though. It's kinda dull, really. I'd do the Japanese thing but then, it's completely different and uninteresting for sure so I think i am going to stick with english but I might try one or two phrases in japanese next time. :-) You have a great evening!
Hi TK,
Wow, I get two votes for that? huh.... but there is nothing wrong for me to sound very queer, is there? I hope not. :-) Damn, I'd love to sound straight but that's not possible since I am so queer. :-) But thanks for your insight. You have a fabulous morning!
Hi AJ,
I'd love to hear you speak Japanese. :-) I am sure it is very cute. :-) There is this Korean girl I know from college and she was very cute when she spoke Japanese while she sounded so direct and forward when she spoke English. :-) I guess Japanese is a feminine language :-) You have a splendid week, too!
Hi Ca va pa la tete,
hahaha. Well, I was born in Tokyo so my Japanese is quite tokyo if you know what I mean but I am not really good at Japanese as I didn't do well in Japanese classes.... huh.. You have a happy day!

Good luck with your job hunt! I hope you can get a job where they don't work you to death - a person should have a little free time now and then.
As for having a different personality depending on the language you speak... when you speak English or French, do you think in those languages? If so, you probably do have a different personality. Languages encode much of a culture's personality, one would think.

Hi Makeurchoice,
You speak interesting languages. I wonder how they sound for real :-) I don't know about my RSS feed. I mean I know I have it but I haven't paid my attention to that a lot. But I will check that out when I have time! Thanks for the heads-up.
Hi Mush,
Thanks very much. :-) I am hoping to get a job that requires me so much less time to work. :-) Well, I am not sure if I think in those languages when I speak them. Because you know I have been asked the same question when I was more fluent and I felt like there was my own language in my head which is not Japanese nor English.... My brain is really messed up.... huh..

I think you have a rather attractive voice.... very deep and husky. Although with a twinge of the "gay inflection" on the English. :)
I cannot speak Japanese well enough to have developed a "projection" of myself the way I do in English or in German...
I am told that my English voice sounds warm and friendly, but direct, and my German is kind of colder and "professionally distant - definitely not a "whisper sweet nothings in your ear" type voice. I wonder what my voice would sound like if I became profficient in Japanese?
I can do imitations of the Tosa dialect (from watching jidai-geki TV shows)... but I'd probably get odd looks from folks on the street if I did that. :P
