A little over the budget...

Fri, 24 February 2006

Japan has been struggling in the Olympic games this time. No medal until today... Shizuka Arakawa won a gold medal for Ladies Figure Skating today. I, of course, watched her performance live. It was brilliant and beautiful. I was very happy for her. However, I was surprised and saddened how CNN/ BBC / USAToday wrote the article about the competition. Those editors, please, it's not because the other two skaters screwed up. She won the gold medal BECAUSE she was the best and skated beautifully! Period. I can't believe how media differs depending on the country where they are. Or am I being a drama queen again? Anyway, it's been a great two week run. Torino Olympic Games will end soon. I like winter Olympic games better than summer's. By the way, did I tell you I don't own a TV back at home but I watched many games during these two weeks? Well, it's crazy but I had two homes for the first week. One is my usual one. The other was my parents'. But I just don't like to be yelled at by my mother so I booked a hotel room for this week to watch Olympic games instead of staying at my parents'. I know. Call me crazy but that hotel is closer to work and it's got a lot of channels. :-) Some nights, I stayed in the room all night long. Some other nights, I stayed at my home. This is my favorite hotel in Tokyo, anyway. If I bought a TV at home, I am sure I wouldn't get out of my place at all. Anyway, it's been tiring/exciting/wonderful two weeks for me. I really enjoyed these special weeks. But I would have enjoyed them more if I went to Torino... huh... Stupid projects at work!!! I wish you a great weekend and I will probably blog tomorrow if there is anything new to share. Have a fantabulous weekend!

It seems to me that the Olympics are very political when it comes right down to it, especially when a certain amount of subjectivity is involved (like figure skating).

Editors and sports broadcasters live their pathetic lives through the wonderful accomplishements of the athletes (win or lose) and project their desires and those of their country onto the poor athletes. Like those American editors saying the Japanese skater won only because the other skaters screwed up, or here in Canada sportscasters continually saying the Canadian men's hockey team "dissapointed the nation."

It's all nuts. Can't we just watch the Games and enjoy the athletic ability and the beauty of the human form and cheer on our favourites (and cutest) without analyzing events and games to death from some sick competitive point of view.

I love the idea you rented a hotel room for the Games. Hope you invited a few athletes over to, ah, share the space.

Have a great weekend.

Nice hotel! You may have to tell me which hotel it is ;-) Last time I was in Tokyo I stayed in a 5* hotel near Shinagawa station but it wasn't that great! GB

how can you enjoy the winter olympics more than the summer olympics?

in the summer olympics, you have men's swimming competitions and men's gymnastics competitions. and it's warm during the summer olympics.

think about it.

I agree with you, she won because she was the best skater. I can't believe the american got a silver medal when she fell twice.

I didn't have a t.v for a while but I missed watching some of my favorite shows. Now I watch t.v. way to much.

I do enjoy watching Winter Olympics and am happy for the gold medal to Arakawa and I agree, she won it because she is great !! You are unique, renting a hotel room for watching the Olympics, wow !!

Congratulations on the olympic gold! You deserve it!

Norway hasn't done as well as expected, and even arch rival Sweden has beaten us. But still, winter olympics are usually more interesting to Norwegians than the summer olympics - we suck at summer sports. (And sucking is not an olympic event...)

I *wish* I didn't have a TV at home. TV drives me crazy, but my husband has to have it on ALL THE TIME.

Nice hotel!

You booked a hotel room just to watch the Olympics? That's fantabulous.

But wouldn't it be cheaper to just BUY a tv?! It's evil yet fantabulous, just like a computer.

That is an amazing hotel room! Can I come by?

Livin' the high life, eh, Shigeki? :-) You're fantabulous!

I love winter much much more than summer. Of course summer is cool but winter is breathtaking (minus the ice melting moment). Did watched some Torino games live and yeah those skaters are just wow wow wow!

I feel sorry for all the Japanese athletes that came in 4th place. Today Fujisankei did a news story on the "failure" of those athletes, and everyone else that didn't bring home a medal. Don't they realize how hard it is just to be selected to be a participant? I guess that's not good enough anymore.

I still think Mao Asada would have kicked everyone's ass in skating if she were just a bit older, but that's a moot point, isn't it? Congrats to Shizuka, Sasha, Irina and the rest of the Olympians in all sports, medal winners or not!

Cool room! You sure it's only for one! :-)

I have not followed the winter olympics at all! Managed to get a glimpse here and there but just didn't have the time. Looking forward to the summer olympics though....more skin to view :-)

Hi Larry,

Yeah, they can be very political. I agree. But somehow I get hooked even though there are a lot of political thingies going on behind. I guess I am one of those guys. :-) You have a great week!

Hi Steve,

It's so sad that every media is very biased. I wish there is a TV channel without any comments but just letting us watch the game. I totally agree with your opinion. But I am glad I am not in the States where a lot of screaming and excitement from those TV casters could be heard through TV while we don't need any of it.... You have a fantabulous week!

Hi Gayboydiary,

Yeah, I like that hotel best. :-) The hotel is called "Park Hyatt Tokyo" which is in the Shinjuku area. Well, to be exact, it's not but close enough. :-) I didn't even know there was a 5 star hotel in Shinagawa.... huh... I'd love to stay at the new Conrad in Tokyo but then, I have a home. :-) You have a splendid week!

Hi Raph,

Well, I see your point. But that's not the primary focus I am doing when I watch them. I snowboard and I used to skate a lot so I can somehow easily relate to those games in winter instead of summer. And it's shorter. :-) I could watch porn if I wanted something steamy, you know. And swimming suits are getting weirder. so, I love Winter Olympics a lot better because I truly enjoy them. yup. Good week!

Hi Cesar,

Yup. She did indeed skate gracefully though I am not a big fan of her actually but I really enjoyed her skating that night. I am also surprised that Cohen girl won the silver medal. See, the reason I try not to own a TV is that I would spend too much on it if I had one. :-) I can live without it really. so this is good. :-) You have a pleasant week!

Hi Alex,

Welcome to my site (I believe this is your first time to comment?)!! Thanks for agreeing with me. I am not upset or anything but I was a little bit surprised when the media delivered the news differently. I know it's kinda bizarre to get a hotel room for that but sometimes, I like nice treat to myself. :-) You have a wonderful week!

Hi Neil,

Welcome to my site! Yup, Japan only got one medal which was won by Arakawa. But it was really enjoyable to watch all the games :-) Good day!

Hi Bjørn,

Yay. Norwegians rule for cross country and other stuff. I've watched one documentary about how popular cross country is in Norway. that was awesome. I guess we don't really suck at summer olympics while we sucked badly this time in Torino.... But it was really enjoyable to watch them regardless of the results. You have a marvelous week!

Hi Mush,

hahaha. I get annoyed when someone watches a TV and eats things at the table and doesn't listen to me at all. that happened quite a lot when I lived with somebody. So I am glad I got rid of it. I am sure I miss some of the things in my life but I don't feel bad about it. It's just that I cannot afford my time, you know. :-) It was a real nice hotel, indeed. You have a gorgeous week!

Hi Will,

yeah, it sounds crazy but that's what I did. But you see, if I wanted to buy a plasma TV, booking the room for a week is cheaper actually. So :-) well, I stick with not having a TV in my place. I am not against TVs but I just don't find it useful for my current lifestyle... Pretty week!

Hi Paul,

Oh yeah, it was amazing. I truly enjoyed it. Sorry. I checked out already. You have a marvelous week!

Hi Mark,

well, not really the high life at all. I don't spend too much money on other things. sometimes, treating something to myself is great. So that's what I did. have a fantastic week!

Hi Ca va pas la tete,

that's great. Me, too. :-) I am assuming you are talking about those speed skating people? Their thighs.... ahhhhhh. I wish their skating suit is a lot thinner than it is. So that we get to see... you know... the profile. :-) ahhhhh. You have a wonderful week!

Hi GaijinGirl,

Yeah, I feel the same way. They did something brilliant but yet not appreciated that much. I mean it was fudging fantabulous when Minagawa for Alpen came in 4th. He says he goes for Vancouver so I am pretty sure he can be great but what he did the day before yesterday was amazing! Did you know Suguri goes for Vancouver as well? I am not sure if she can be brilliant.... You have a fantastic week!

Hi Ian,

Oh yeah, it was a cool room for sure. :-) Well, it's totally alright not to watch them because everyone's interest differs from others'. :-) And that makes our lives more interesting. But I am kind looking forward to next Winter olympic games in Vancouver instead of the summer ones. :-) you have a wonderful week!
