How the hell are you?

Thu, 26 January 2006

In English, it's common to ask people how you are in the beginning of the conversation, no? Back in an English class at junior high, we were taught the answer to that question is "I am fine. Thank you. and you?". No matter how shitty you are, the answer is always "I am fine. Thank you. And you?" That's the only answer I was taught. I think this "how are you" rule I was taught still haunts me. I thought this was the silver bullet answer to every "how are you?" question. When I was an exchange student in Portland, Oregon, I, for the first time in my life, got to know there were other answers to the question. That was the biggest culture shock as well as people didn't take shoes off inside the house. I didn't even think there were other ways to say "I am fine." I also realized from my personal experience that "how are you?" doesn't mean they really want to know how you are. It's just a starter for the conversation. But we say it anyway. Today, when I got a call from a friend, I was grumpy as I was programming some application... This magical "How are you?" question was asked by him. So I said "Do you really really want to know how I am?" I broke the rule. I should have said "I am fine, thank you. And you?" just like I was taught back in school... I am so sorry, Kirk! So how are you, today? On a different note, I was extremely stressed this morning so I bought this on a lunch break even though I didn't plan on buying it.... I said good-bye to my iPod Mini... I think my complusive puchase behavior is worse than Will's. (no offense, sweetie)... I didn't even research on it like he does... Anyway, I am gonna enjoy this. You have a gorgeous Thursday! um.... did I ask you how you are?

I'm fine, thank you. And you?

Actually, I have killer shoulder pain and I can't turn my head very far to the left. Maybe I slept in a funny position last night.

Nothing like impulsive shopping to make you feel G-O-O-D!!!!!!!! I've got to reboot my iPod Photo. It's been out of action since October (can you see how high it ranked in my priority list?)

You are such a cutie. I could kiss you.

And would that be fine. Thank you very much?

Formality!
Without this, I think we can understand other people deeper. Well, at least, you don't have to pretend that you're happy if you're feeling unhappy.
Such much to learn every day... ;-)

That's the very same answer I was taught ! ha-ha;-D
There is a sort of homour or sarcasm related to that 'How are you' question as well..Anyway,that song of..Lifehouse,'You and me' is great, isn't it..? I haven't listened to the other songs,though..

I am fine, thank you. And you? Actually my hamstrings are killing me after working them too hard the other day. I am soooo envious of you and Larry and your fantabulous video iPods. And I love the case!

This new toy plus your Chevy bike - you're be hottie buddy :-) Flaunt those butts of yours and who knows, someone will be out there eyeing your Butt! :-)

Well - at least tomorrow is Friday and it should be less stressed isn't? Take it easy - go for another 6am run and you'll be right. Cheers

I'm good, thank you. And you?
I'm sure better! Yay on the new iPod video! Yay that we got the same black one! I should probably get that Prie Ambassador case that you got, looks really good, but it's rather expensive here in Manila. I am using the sleeve that came with my unit and it looks so skanky and dirty now. Ha! Have a great Friday ahead!

I've had this discussion with any number of people. We've all come to the same conclusion. The "How are you?" Conversation is a space-filler. If we REALLY want to know how someone is, we will word the question differently. However, we truly are fascinated when we ask the question, and someone actually tells us how they really are today....

Good post!

I'm fine, thank you! And how are you?

NICE NEW IPOD, BABY! I love iPods. I love my iPod. I love *your* iPod. IPods! Yay!

Posted by: Mush at January 27, 2006 12:15 AM

I really really want to know how you are :-) Do you need a *hug*?

When I taught in Japan, my friends and I used to fight the "I'm fine.
Thank you. And you?" autoresponse, by saying things like "I'm GREAT!"
or "I'm good." or "I'm sad." and then watching our junior high
students' heads explode. Although, some of the more adventurous
thinkers did manage to catch on :-) Fun times.

Happy Thursday. Hope you are feeling less cranky.

*smooch*

How are you Shigeki-san? :D

Lol don't mind me... i find myself replying in the usual way too... although more often than not, I'm usually saying "I'm high on sugar! So beware!" or sometimes "Horrible... need more... sleep...."

Another new iPod? Or is that something else? Haha I have no clue as to iPods or any other Mp3 players of sort nowadays.... I'm so behind in news!

I'm super! Thanks for asking!!!

I had a friend in college who would always say "Fucking lousy morning!" to people that he knew. He was a rebel!!

I am fine. Thank you. And you?

I have always found it interesting that people in the office pass you in the halls and they always ask how you are doing but they don't even stop to hear an answer they just keep on walking.
Or when you ask them something else instead of the usual "how are you?" they always answer "fine thanks, and you?". That is always funny to hear :)

shigeki- Life is grand over here on this side of the planet. How are you :-) I-pods are pretty nice. Of course, I don't have one. I have an MP3 player in my phone that is suppose to have much better sound than anything Apple makes. It is a totally awesome feature. I hope all is well with you. -gregg

I'm fantabuleux of course, dahling. And YES you ARE a bigger shopping whore than me dear, though if I had your purchasing power (and your stress levels) I'd buy myself lots of happy too.

I realised that the question is rhetoric quite some time ago myself. It's like the Chinese culture of asking "Have you eaten?" even if it's some weird hour like 10pm at night. What's the usual Japanese greeting then?

Posted by: Will at January 27, 2006 08:24 AM

Yeah, the expected response to "how are you" depends on your intimacy with the person asking, ie: how well you know them ..... If you know someone fairly well, then it's ok to say "oh, I'm feeling a bit shitty today" or whatever, but if you don't know someone very well then I think it's considered a bit weird to say anything other than "fine thanks", it's just a formality.

I got my ipod back - a new one. (well, this is the third unit i have (2 which are replacement) Yuppie

In french, you do the same - " ca va? " you asked and everyone will response - 'ca va, et toi?" (ca va - good? et toi - and you?)

Hi GaijinGirl,

That's great to hear. :) Well, I am sorry that you are in pain. I hope you sleep in the right position today. Well, what's the right position? I wonder... Well, my impulsive shopping behavior has to end but I can't... I am so sick... You have a fantabulous weekend!

Hi Paul,

Thank you very much. That's so kewl that I get a kiss from the naughty doctor. That's awesome. :) You have a fantabulous weekend with red packets. :)

Hi Seishi,

Formality. Exactly. Well, some people ask you how you are and leave without hearing your answer. That's so interesting. How are you doesn't mean how are you anymore, I think. :) You have a fantabulous weekend!

Hi Leigh,

That's good. :) Now we both know there are different answers. Yay! Well, how are you doesn't mean how are you anymore. I wish some dictionary explains "how are you?" doesn't mean a person who asked the question is interested in knowing your condition. :) Lifehouse is great! yay. I love them! Have a wonderful weekend!

Hi Kevin,

I am also fine. Thank you. And you? (hahaha. some of us keep saying "and you?". That's a good sign that your hamstrings are killing you because they will be fantabulous and yummy :) Honestly, that video part wasn't necessary for me but I didn't wanna buy "nano" so i chose that one. I haven't done anything video on it.. :) You have a fantastic weekend!

HI Ian,

OH yes. I love my new toys. Chevy and iPod. Well, I will see about that but my goal until summer this year will be that I'd be healthier and muscularer. :) I will enjoy my morning run. Yay. It's really refreshing but it's even better if you can smoke right after smoking which I quit ... I miss smoking.... Anyway, you have a wonderful weekend!

Hi Mark,

I am great, thanks. :) You got a 60GB one or 30GB? I got 30GB because 60GB is too much for me. I didn't know that case was expensive as it came for free in my case.... I think my iPod is okay but I am not excited about my new one or anything... that's kinda werd... IT's like I've gotten used to it so already.... you have a fantabulous weekend!

HI Mr. Brian,

That's good that you guys came to the conclusion about the space filler. I feel the same way, too. But it's kinda rude that people say "How are you?" and they leave without hearing the answer. Then, what's the point? Hi would be more appropriate. :) I was kinda surprised that "I am fine, Thank you. and You?" routine was never seen while I was there. :) You have a fantabulous weekend!

Hi Mush,

I am damn great. :) Another iPod enthusiast :-) I think I like my new iPod alright but at a normal amount. Nothing more, nothing less. Am I a cold blooded person?? huh... You have a fantabulous weekend!

Hi EnviroBoi,

That's good. I think I'd rather have a hug. I need more hugs as I am here in japan.... where hugging is not common.. How sad. Well, I didn't do anything exceptional other than following "I am fine, thank you. and you?" routine because I wanted to be great at the entrace exam so I didn't do anything other than what we were taught to do.... :) You have a fantabulous weekend!

HI Chris,

I am good, thanks. I think it's meaningless after all, is it? But that's alright since we can still communicate without damn question/answer routine. :) Well, it's a newer iPod but it just came with extra features... I am not so much excited about it. I am just glad I have it. :) You have a fantabulous weekend!

HI Hanuman,

That's great that you are super! You know who's worse than your college buddy who used to say "fucking lousy moorning?" ??? These guys who say "Sky" or "clouds" after asking "What's up?". That's the lamest answer I could ever hear... and they kept saying it... That's not smart. :) you have a fantabulous weekend!

Hi Cesar,

I am glad you are fine. I am fine, too. :) I know people pass you by without finishing the whole routine. That's kinda rude sometimes. But if I put it in the way I should, it is not rude I think... :) I am fine. Thank you. And you? is kinda too long so I always say. "Good." that's it. :) You have a great weekend!

Hi Gregg,

Congratulations! You made the 2000th comment on my blog. Thank yoU! For the prize, I present you my good thoughts! That's great that you are doing prety good over there. :) I am doing pretty good, too. I didn't know there were people who happen to be very sensitive about the sound quality :-) I see you are very satisifed with your MP3 player. :) You have a fantabulous weeekend!

Hi Will,

That's great to hear you are fantabulous. Well, to be honest, you are the bigger whore! I am just a little cute shopper. :) I don't bring a lot of bags carrying around like you did in Taipei. :) and I don't have a boyfriend so I am entitled to luxury. :) I didn't know about the "Have you eaten?" thingy. That's great to know. :) I think our Japanese greeting is "Domo". It can mean "Thank you", too. It's weird. :) You have a fantabulous weekend!

Hi Tim,

I think you are totally right but if I am really curious to know how the person is, like Mr. Brian said, I'd change my question to something else. I don't come up with it right now but I don't really say "how are you?" Formality. :) Well, unfortunately, I can be inappropriate and I am the person without formalities under certain circumstances.. :( anyway, you have a fantabulous weekend!

Hi Ca va pas la tete,

That's great that you got a new iPod. I don't think I can live without an iPod. :) I always say "Comme ci comme ca" or "Pas grand chose" when I was asked the question in French as it would sound just like every other parisian there. :) You have a fantabulous weekend!
