artistic vs mathematic

Sun, 2 October 2005

Michael from Vancouver, Canada, who is by the way a graphic artist, suggested me something I haven't really thought about. To study "art". According to him, I have some creative qualiity in me. I don't see it that much but he does. All I did art in my life was when I studied a BFA program for about 2 terms. I changed my major to Biochemistry after that. Thoughts come and go, and I admit I have interest in doing something artistic. I have never thought I'd want to do this more seriously. I hear being creative is difficult sometimes. I can easily imagine how hard it can be. I haven't really come to the conclusion yet. The scariest thing of all is change a career path at the age of 30. Well, make it 31. My IT field is very promising and I have never thought of being creative as my job requires me to be mathematic instead. I like being mathematic actually. I can be a big failure if I decide to do something artistic. But on the other hand, I want to explorer how articstic I can be. It's such a juxtaposition. I am not going to decide to conclude it right away. I have never been thinking about my life plan adjustment this much. But I currrently am. I will try to see if I can create any portfolio but if it doesn't turn out good, I'd probably give up on the idea of being artistic. I will know... I will sleep on it. It's giving me headache but I am excited oddly at the same time. I drew this hand quickly to calm myself down while thinking about odd things...... Going to church. Happy Sunday everybody!

You are *definitely* gifted in your sketching and I think your animated posts are AMAZING, but I think you know better than anyone how difficult it is to switch careers in Japan, especially given the current economy. Conbini Boy is conbini-bound because he quit his job to travel in the US for 18 months. He's having a hard time finding a permanent job now, but it's not because he's a bad guy or a bad worker. It's just the way Japan is. I'd keep drawing as a hobby--maybe you can sell pieces on eBay or at weekend events. It's much safer to stay in IT, I think!

Hey, there could be something there. Ever thought of doing more with your sketching?

You know, there's really no such thing as being a failure in artistry. It's self expression, and it's like saying you're a failure in blogging.

Which of course, you're SO not, and thus you won't in art either.

Switching lines isn't easy. As I mentioned all too often, coming from a science degree & now doing a mass communications job is challenging, but more satisfying. Compiling your port folio whiles you still work at IT is a wise decision. And don't take rejection too hard because we face alot of it! Just keep improving and you will be fine!

Hi Mark,

Thanks. I will see if it's doable or not. I might get tired of it before I seriously dig in though. :-) Thanks for stopping by and you have a great day!

Hi GaijinGirl,

That's true but it's going to be Digital Media thingy that my IT background can be benefitial. I mean I am going to use some of my IT background with it. You see I designed the product package at work when they didn't have any designer and the package is still the same as I designed :-) I just wanna see and try before thinking too much. :-) Thanks for your input! Have a great day!

Hi Paul,

It's more like digital media thingy instead of sketching. I'd be totally doomed if I do something like Master of Fine Arts. :-) Because I don't have any basics. :-) I will see how it goes. You have a good day!

HI Will,

That's very sweet of you but Van Gogh didnt' really seem successful when he was alive unfortunately. I just don't wanna be extremely poor to rely on some family's money to live. :-) That's my goal. hehehe. It would be better to get rich with it but I don't see that happening either. I will see. Thanks for stopping by! Good day!

Hi AJ,

That's very nice of you to say so. Well, it's not a final decision and I still have time so I am not sure how far I will go. I might end up sticking up with the current field forever. :-) I am just so excited about the idea of doing something I wanted to do. :-) Thanks for stopping by and you have a wondeful day!
